Writing

In Year 1 our main aim is  to punctuate sentences using a capital letter and a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Spaces between words are also expected.

There is also an expectation that children in Year 1 begin to form lower-case letters in the correct direction, starting and finishing in the right place.

Reading

As phonics is a big focus in Year 1 it is essential that they are applying their phonic knowledge and skills as the route to decode words.

It is expected for children to read accurately by blending sounds in unfamiliar words whilst also being able to read common exception words such as said, there, my.

Maths

Our target is to recognise, write and understand the value of numbers up to 100. It is also expected that in Year 1 children can read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction (–) and equals (=) signs.

This term we have covered length, weight, money and time. Our next focus is to cover fractions and division.
